‘These Times They Are A-Changin’ Bob Dylan once sang and there is change in the air at Coffee Yard. From staff members to the menu and the ever changing weather, it is an exciting time in the Yard.

The first change was one of scenery for Jim and Nicki as they left the confines of Holywood, Co Down for a mini European tour to take in the sights of Vienna and Budapest.

Kneeling_Female_in_Orange-Red_DressThey had an amazing time and managed to pick up some artwork for themselves despite being asked to leave several art galleries as Jim was more interested in finding a staircase to sit under than the fine pieces on show. The romance of Vienna was not lost on Jim as he treated Nicki to a rummage through the skips of Vienna in the hunt for packaging to bring home their wares.  (Some very nice Egon Schiele prints are now hanging in Yard Gallery)

Times may be changing but the classics stay the same and when Jim and Nicki had a chance to see 1949 cult classic ‘The Third Man’ they felt they couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Our intrepid explorers set off. It wasn’t until 50 seconds into the film that all wasn’t as it seemed as Jim and Nicki had accidently wondered into a showing of new sci-fi remake, Mad Max. All wasn’t lost though as, rumour has it; Nicki has now replaced her Orson Welles posters with that of Hollywood hunk Tom Hardy.

The three sunny days we had at the beginning of May has led to the Yard reintroducing our summer menu. Change can be daunting and it doesn’t come more daunting than waving a teary, temporary goodbye to the stews. This sent shockwaves through the Yard clientèle with rumours of online petitions and organised pickets until the stew was reinstated. However, the new quiche and pizza soon won them over, a close call!

It’s all change with Holywood icon and barista extraordinaire Milos and his partner Helena with the birth of their daughter, Sophia. Milos hasn’t stopped smiling and said he couldn’t wait for her to say her first words so she could be trained up on the till.*

*He may not have said this.

With Joanna and Rachel pregnant there will soon be, like the stew (but with less tears), a temporary goodbye to them but the till of Coffee Yard will never look the same again with the departure of Ciara Campbell. Long term teller and full time scone enthusiast Ciara has worked here for seven years and has decided to leave for a career in Law. We will miss you Ciara and there will always be a raspberry and white chocolate scone with your name on it.

There is an exciting change for Gail who has recently bought her first house. The trouble with buying a home is putting your own style on it and filling the bare walls. Who knows how Yard Gallery and part time artist Gail will do this but we wish her all the best.

Winter may be coming back to Westeros

As the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts through Yard Gallery we, in the command centre, are musing at what’s going on around us – it’s brainstorming BLOG TIME.
Hands up if you were taken by surprise at the perfect, hot sunny weather at Donegal or if you soaked up the sun along our tropical north coast this Easter? Well what a change it’s been this week, don’t put away you winter coats just yet!  ‘Can’t be fabulous all of the time!’ says Ronan (although.. on second thoughts, he could be referring to himself.)

Holywood may be basking in our glorious cloud cover, but Game-Of-Thrones-House-Of-Stark-Winter-Is-Comingbe prepared, winter may be coming back to Westeros; Oh yes, the eagerly anticipated new season of Game of Thrones has begun and we are all desperately hoping for our favourite characters to remain healthy and more importantly alive throughout the whole of this series – don’t be tempted to read ahead in your book!
We are debating whether we should send a basket of muffins to Kit Harrington, to cheer him up. Has no one ever thought to bring him to Coffee Yard for a Yard Fry and a coffee? Come on PR people!

In the Aladdin’s Cave that is Yard Gallery we have a GOT collection of quality inspired prints, one of which is entitled House Stark Winter Is Coming. The print features a very dark and moody Jon Snow with a menacing white winter wolf – just a little too big to be a fur throw that Vivienne Westwood might be proud of.
The Game of Thrones has inspired the BBC news blogs, which are trending the ‘art of political photoshopping’. The Liberal Democrats have edited pictures of party leaders onto images from Game of Thrones, making us smile this morning. This leads us nicely into mentioning the Election frenzy building up all over the country. What a ride that will be, buckle up and keep your arms and legs in the car at all times. While pictures of our local politicians adorn every lamppost and as they talk the talk (or not!) David Cameron, the ladies choice, is promising us all a ‘good life’. Is that possible, we ponder?

We leave you with this Blair Baillie print: ‘Hyena With Shakespeare Quote.’ Spoken by Autolycus in ‘The Winter’s Tale’, ‘Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance'

    Meet the Gallery Staff

RonanOur gallery assistant Ronan (affectionately nicknamed Ronie) is a lifelong fan of rebellious fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Vivienne was a pioneer of the punk movement in the 70’s- perhaps this is where Ronan found the inspiration for his unique finger-in-plug-socket-style spikey hairdo. At times, working in the fast-paced gallery framing up artwork to order can get quite stressful, and Ronan will often end up covered from head to toe in sellotape- so if you see a mummified member of staff lugging around picture frames, with random objects stuck to him- you know who it is. Other hobbies include organising fashion shows and events, window dressing, and walking on the treadmill at the gym.

GailGail (also goes by Gail Force and Gailers, to name but a few) is the gallery manager, and you will most often see her positioned in the “seat of power” under the stairs, manning the gallery desk. This is where she does all her best business- cutting deals and firing off emails left and right.

In her spare time, Gail enjoys painting, origami, and felting- you may have spotted our afternoon tea display piece- this is Gail’s handiwork, made entirely of felt! Gail is also a keen pug fan, and is excited to move into a new house in a few months, where she will finally be able to buy a real pug of her very own, and name it Doug. Doug the pug. Brilliant!

And now we get to Jim, the gallery owner- where to start?  In contrast to Ronan, Jim’s take on fashion takes a kind of ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ approach. You will recognise his daily uniform of black trousers and a light blue shirt- this uniform works in any environment- formal- check, holiday- check, work, meetings, social, you name it. Jim used to occupy the aforementioned ‘seat of power’ but has since relinquished it to Gail, despite being so proud of buying the seat itself for a mere one pence (he also had to buy approximately seven miles of sellotape to qualify for this fantastic deal.) Whenever he gets a rare break away  from work, Jim enjoys travelling and picking up interesting artworks along the way.

    New Website

Today is a very exciting day for Yard Gallery- today we cut the ribbon on our brand spanking new website and invite you in to have a browse of all our products. All your old favourites are still here, plus we’ve stocked up on some shiny new ones. Whether it’s quirky homewares, unique prints, or eye-catching original artwork- we’re still your go-to. There has been a lot of hard graft that has gone into the design, build and virtual 'shelf stacking' of this new website, but we're very pleased with the end result and we hope you will be too! Happy browsing.
