A lifetime of scanning artist’s monographs and reading everything from pulp fiction to classics has invested my work with a vocabulary of half remembered impressions and brazenly pilfered imagery. Sometimes these borrowed images will register with the viewer with a curious sense of déjà vu and other times with a hearty laugh – either of these reactions are valid and welcome. Above all else my desire is to communicate my preoccupations and passions whilst never forsaking either my sense of humour or my technique. He painted an 8 x 10 metre mural on the side of a building on the Mile End Road, London E1. In a style reminiscent of his Life Imitating Art etchings he created a vista depicting important buildings from the Mile End and Whitechapel Roads and peopled the scene with famous and notable historical figures that have some connection with the area. Film Notes from the Underground In the spring of 2013 Mychael completed work on Notes from the Underground, a four-plate etching and relief print done in honour of the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. This piece combines a stylized map of the London Underground with 270 specific references to all of the stations. It was first shown with Brook Gallery at the London Original Print Fair but then at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. Sanju Mathew has made a short film based on this print which you can see by entering ‘Mychael Barratt’ into the YouTube menu or by using the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAgVF6gc658#at=51
