Details

'The Roundabout'  is a signed limited edition print by Lorcan Vallely printed on heavy archival paper.

The roundabout depicted in the image, alongside a peace wall in Belfast belonged to a street entertainer called Mickey Marley who died 28 April 2005.  Marley would tour the streets of Belfast with his hobby-horse roundabout, a common sight in Belfast City Centre for over forty years and was drawn by his horse Joey. When he retired he sold the roundabout to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
His local fame was enhanced by a recording of the song "Mickey Marley's Roundabout" (written by Belfastman Seamus Robinson) which was a popular children's request on BBC Radio Ulster. BBC Northern Ireland also made a documentary on his life. The 1973 film followed Marley's everyday life, against the backdrop of the heavy British Army presence on the streets of Belfast during the early years of the Troubles.

The original image, from which this print was taken, was built up with layers of tonal charcoal.  In addition oils were used to add a very effective splash of colour.

Lorcan has a unique, contemporary style which reflects his interest in the imagery of the past. Each print is a snapshot of a time gone by and his current work captures images specifically from 1960s and 70s Ireland.
