Michael Walsh

Michael Walsh is a Belfast photographer, best known for his unique cityscapes of his hometown. Growing up in the 1970’s, Michael occupied himself with the small family Kodak Instamatic camera and his love of photography only grew stronger. Upon leaving school, he briefly studied Civil Engineering but gave it up and bought himself a camera and began working as a freelance photographer.

He built himself a small darkroom in the corner of his bedroom and set about learning his trade, shooting rolls of Kodak Tri-X black and white film during the day and sitting up all night developing and printing his negatives. He is also an accomplished graphic designer and has been part of two different award winning teams, firstly winning the IPR/BT Magazine of the Year award in 1999, with the local music magazine Baseline/BBM he designed and later as Managing Director of design studio Manila Guerilla, who were the first NI based studio to win the prestigious McNaughton Design Award in 2007. In 2009, Michael gave up the corporate world and now works on his own creating stunning cityscapes and landscapes along with high end graphics and promotional films for his clientele. These days (and nights) he can be found hanging from the back door of a helicopter hovering over the city or perched on top of a tall building waiting for the decisive moment.
