'Blocked Border Road' is a signed photographic print by Frankie Quinn of a blocked road between Fermanagh and Donegal circa 1995. Blocked roads came to be such iconic images of the border and a dominant feature of borderlands life. From the 1970s roads were blocked by the security forces in attempts to prevent paramilitary movement across the border and to make the border impermeable except for the crossing points subject to security checks.
This is a signed and dated hand printed silver gelatin print by Frankie Quinn, developed in a darkroom on glossy photographic paper which shows strong contrasts - blacks in the image are more prominent. This print dates back many years to when the photograph was developed and as such show signs of wear and tear, which in a perverse way has added character to the photograph. This print, along with the rest in his analogue print series, are among the last remaining black and white darkroom prints he developed.
