'Mountain Stories No. 7' is a signed hand-crafted sculpture by Sally Houston.
"The sculptures are made from old paperback books. Using small pliers, I begin to tear the pages, perhaps five at a time. They tear naturally to form irregular layers resembling sedimentary rock and I can control the form I want them to take. I build up a solid block by adding more books of the same size.
I fix the leaves in place using PVA glue on the page edges and replace the soft back with a thick card to hold the form in place. I often use paint over collaged photos to cover the book front and back, my intention being to create an organic surface, yet sticking to materials sympathetic to the printed book. A section of cast plaster is also used in some of the pieces to suggest a shift in the rock strata or to alter the balance of the book."
